What Is The Allure Of Canoeing

The draw of the canoe and its possibilities is actually relatively simple. It can be very, very peaceful to sit out in a boat, carefully moving over the water without disturbing wildlife and waterfowl. The repetitive, slow movements of paddling are soothing and semi-hypnotic and the quiet lulls individuals into a pleasant state of mind. If you’ve had a stressful day, being able to drift on the motionless water of a lake and simply see the wonder of nature around you can be incredibly calming. Many people go out of their way to go canoeing as often as possible, the sensation it brings nearly addictive.

Well, any of those visuals are fine images that represent the canoe. You can often see canoes when you visit a public lake or beach on a river. People will be out on the water, gently dipping their paddle and spurring their boat onwards, or laughing and giggling as they try to tip the craft over. What is the fun of this type of hobby, you might ask? Why would someone go out of their way to sit in what looks like a wobbly, perhaps even slightly leaky boat, risking getting wet, falling overboard and possibly worse? Who would enjoy such a boring thing as paddling back and forth, when there’s no excitement? Or for those watching breakneck whitewater descents in a canoe, you may be asking who on earth is crazy enough to attempt such a feat?

Canoeing can also provide a real rush to adrenaline junkies. Whitewater rafters and kayakers are made from the same mold as individuals who want to attempt careening down crashing rapids and love getting soaked with spray. The canoe presents a definite challenge to those who love a thrill, as its construction makes it harder to maneuver down rapids and the cut of its hull can bring on a lot of speed. Whitewater canoeing is fantastic for those who love a pounding heart, adventure and excitement.

Paddling a canoe can be good exercise and provides lots of physical activity. The motions can really build upper-arm strength, as you’re pushing a boat with nothing but a wide stick of wood, even if it doesn’t quite seem so to a casual observer. Canoeing often enough can build up your shoulder and arm muscles easily and the activity works well as a cardiovascular exercise. The sport is also low impact and can be carried out by people of all different ages, from the young to senior citizens. Being fit is important for your live and can impact all areas of it, as well as improving your general well being.
