The draw of the canoe and its possibilities is actually relatively simple. It can be very, very peaceful to sit out in a boat, carefully moving over the water without disturbing wildlife and waterfowl. The repetitive, slow movements of paddling are soothing and semi-hypnotic and the quiet lulls individuals into a pleasant state of mind. If you’ve had a stressful day, being able to drift on the motionless water of a lake and simply see the wonder of nature around you can be incredibly calming. Many people go out of their way to go canoeing as often as possible, the sensation it brings nearly addictive.

Well, any of those visuals are fine images that represent the canoe. You can often see canoes when you visit a public lake or beach on a river. People will be out on the water, gently dipping their paddle and spurring their boat onwards, or laughing and giggling as they try to tip the craft over. What is the fun of this type of hobby, you might ask? Why would someone go out of their way to sit in what looks like a wobbly, perhaps even slightly leaky boat, risking getting wet, falling overboard and possibly worse? Who would enjoy such a boring thing as paddling back and forth, when there’s no excitement? Or for those watching breakneck whitewater descents in a canoe, you may be asking who on earth is crazy enough to attempt such a feat?

Canoeing can also provide a real rush to adrenaline junkies. Whitewater rafters and kayakers are made from the same mold as individuals who want to attempt careening down crashing rapids and love getting soaked with spray. The canoe presents a definite challenge to those who love a thrill, as its construction makes it harder to maneuver down rapids and the cut of its hull can bring on a lot of speed. Whitewater canoeing is fantastic for those who love a pounding heart, adventure and excitement.

Paddling a canoe can be good exercise and provides lots of physical activity. The motions can really build upper-arm strength, as you’re pushing a boat with nothing but a wide stick of wood, even if it doesn’t quite seem so to a casual observer. Canoeing often enough can build up your shoulder and arm muscles easily and the activity works well as a cardiovascular exercise. The sport is also low impact and can be carried out by people of all different ages, from the young to senior citizens. Being fit is important for your live and can impact all areas of it, as well as improving your general well being.

Backpacking trips don’t mean that you’re setting out from your own home to explore the trails in the local park. These days, more people are demanding fantastic backpacking vacations and tour companies have responded very well indeed. Now, your choice of what type of backpacking trip you’d like to have is only limited by your imagination. Did you want to hike across the glaciers of Alaska or sleep under the stars in the Australian outback? You could try an Ireland backpacker expedition and roam Celtic lands. Here are some more great backpacking vacations available:

If you like the sun and warmth, backpacking Mexico destinations can be a great alternative to heading down south to laze on a beach. There are pyramids and ruins in Mexico with backpacking tours that let you explore Aztec temples to your satisfaction. You’ll be stunned by the first-hand experience of being in a location full of legend. Other locations you’ll explore on your vacation backpacking Mexico wonders will be the famous Shrine of our Lady of Guadalupe, a highly visited religious site. Other tours available include the City of Eternal Spring or the Gardens of Xochimilco.

A European backpack vacation can be another wonderful experience full of culture. The size of the countries in Europe means that in two weeks and at budget-conscious expenses, you can tour the trails of several vacation destinations and see different people and places. Recommendations for European backpack holidays suggest careful planning, as those who hike their way through places in Europe on their own might find different countries and unfamiliar languages confusing.

One backpacking mountain tour brings you to the highest mountain of the Ukraine in the Carpathians. You can ascend to the summit of the Doboshanka! Those backpackers who’d like to get a taste of Everest can do so by taking one of the backpacking trips to the mountain’s base camps. Be forewarned that mountain-climbing backpacking trips can be arduous and require good physical fitness.

If you don’t want to have a wild backpacking tour, settling for more sedate backpacking trips is just fine. You can chose a European backpacking tour that involves nothing more than a stay in the hotel and traveling through cities by day on foot. Walking tours come in a close second to their hiking counterparts. Backpacking Italy is another wonderful way to see beautiful buildings and romantic locations without needing to exert yourself to climb mountains.

The destinations of your backpacking trips are only limited by how many places you can think of traveling to. You can find all sorts of backpacking tour companies that will help you make your travel reservations and fill you in on trip details. You could opt for letting your feet take you where they would by booking a flight and nothing else. Once you arrive at your destination, you’ll wander wherever you please. These types of backpacking trips are great on a budget, but do some pre-expedition planning and try to have some type of itinerary in mind.

There’s nothing like a camping trip to help you reconnect with nature. The hush of a quiet forest or the roar of the sea can give a camping trip a magical feel. Sharing the outdoors with creepy crawlies and wild animals adds an element of danger, however remote.

Some campers prefer the home away from home experience you get in a motor home or trailer: indoor bunk beds, kitchens, and running water. But hardcore campers like to go tent camping.

Why Go Tent Camping?

A tent camping trip may be the most inexpensive vacation you’ve ever taken. You can get a “like new” four person tent with a waterproof tarp for $25 on a popular online classified site, and a car with four passengers can get a weeklong entry pass to Yosemite for $20. Where else can four people get a week’s worth of lodging for only $45?

Besides being economical, tent camping gives campers more of a “back to nature” experience than camper or RV camping. RV campers tend to spend at least some of their time indoors in the RV. Tent campers hardly spend any time at all in their tents, unless they are sleeping. The rest of the time, tent campers are outdoors, sitting under a canopy in folding chairs or at a picnic table, enjoying the beauty of nature that surrounds them.

Most tents have flaps that can be folded back on the outside to create windows. With tent camping, you can open these flaps, see the night sky, and get the sense of sleeping under the stars without giving up the shelter that keeps you away from bugs and other crawling creatures.

Another reason tent camping is so popular is because you can set a tent up just about anywhere. Thus, campers can backpack into the woods, hike for three days straight, and camp beneath the shelter of a tent every night. You just can’t do that in a Winnebago.

Why Not Go Tent Camping?

Granted, tent camping is not for everyone. Understandably, frail campers like the safety and security of a camper or travel home. Travel home campers who carry a lot of valuables with them get a sense of security out of having a door with a lock on it.

Other campers simply prefer the relative comfort of sleeping on a bed instead of an air mattress, and being able to use the bathroom if they have to in the middle of the night without heading for a shower room or, worse, disappearing into the woods with a plastic bag and a roll of toilet paper.

Skiing is a fun sport for all age groups. However, certain types of skiing are more well-suited for adults. For example, cross country skiing is a sport that is very difficult and is best-suited for older children and adults. In contrast, downhill (alpine) skiing may be suitable for younger children with supervision. Cross country skiing is a sport that not only offers the fun of being outdoors; it also offers an excellent work-out. There are a couple of types of cross country skiing. Cross country skiing is also a Winter Olympic event, and is actually one of the oldest Winter Olympic events.

Classic Cross Country Skiing

Cross country skiing can be done using classic, skating, or telemark methods. The classic style is what most people think of when they think of cross country skiing. This type of back country skiing uses long, light skis. These skis are also very narrow and are different from what is used for downhill skiing. The bindings and boots used in this type of skiing are also different than what is used for downhill skiing.

The Skating Method of Skiing

The skating method of skiing is a style that is very similar to ice skating. The skier uses a method that is similar to what is used by ice skaters to propel them. Generally, specialized skating style across country skis are used for this method. Bindings and boots can either be specialized for skating cross country skiing or can be a combination style, which can be used for this and for classic country skiing.

Telemark Skiing

Telemark skiing is a type of hybrid skiing. Generally used for backcountry ski areas, telemarking involves the use of bindings which leave a person heels free. This method is used for going downhill is that it is used for cross country skiing. This method of skiing is characterized by traveling downhill doing normal parallels with the exception of the fact that the inside heel and skis will be hanging behind the skier. By having a binding that allows the keeled move up from the ski, this method is possible.

Cross Country in the Olympics

Cross country is also an Olympic event. Cross country skiing became an Olympic event, the very first year the Winter Olympics occurred, in 1924. Women’s cross country skiing, became an event in the 1952 Olympics. Overall, Norway has dominated this event and the Olympics, followed by Finland and the Soviet Union (when it existed).
